Kenya being a signatory to the 1951 United Nations Convention, the 1967 Protocol and the 1969 Organization of African Union Convention, continues to offer protection to refugees and asylum seekers.
The advent of refugees in Kenya can be traced back to the period before independence; however after independence the government set up a secretariat in the Ministry of Home affairs to handle refugees’ documentation, registration and settlement programs after independence.
